I enjoy this lens, the “creative” abilities are really nice. The small size really make it portable and its by far “sharp enough” in center.

The downsides are offcourse many, lets net kid ourselfes here.

There is CA,less then i though of the “sharp” CA thats around sharp edges, but more of the dark purple kind that bleed into the black/dark areas a bit. A skipole for example can almost be overrun by CA.

Ghosting or soft white touch to the images are alot less then i anticipated, and with some clarity its almost gone in most pictures.

Biggest downside is the edges, the are truly horrible. There is no way to get a sharp image all across the frame.

Bokeh can be alittle strange at f1.1 the bokeh balls (if there are alot) sort of draws toward the middle. It looks odd some times, some times it helps to draw atention.

Flares more then any lens i ever used, but in the right angle there is no flare.

Apart from the edge sharpness, the lens is alot better @f1.3~1.4. Most CA is gone, ghosting or white touch is gone, sharpness is alot better. the “strange” bokeh is looking normal.

This lens is not gonna be for everyone thats for sure, but in center even wideopen, its pretty sharp, and its got alot of detail. With some initial sharpening in Lightroom and some Highpass in PS you got yourself details in spades in most cases.

So far my opinion is, if you know what you get and use it accordingly, this is totaly great.

Smal, not to heavy. Fun to use. Good looking. Sharp in center. BOKEH! 🙂

(But like i said, the downsides are many, see text above 😉 )

But for everyone? Hells no.

Nokton 35mm f1.2 II

Sony a7r + Nokton 35mm f1.2 II

Well i have found a few things out so far. It has CA, not as bad as the MFT version (Nokton 17.5mm f0.95), and the 35mm got vinjetting, problably worse then the 17.5mm.

DOF is no where near the same (obviosly, f0.95~f1.9). The pop you get out of this is far superior to the 17.5mm. Over all image quality is alot less consistent on the 35mm (se pics above). The edge sharpness of the 35mm wideopen, and even stopped down is bad. really bad wide open and rather bad stopped down. Corner sharpness is better then edge sharpness(?), isnt that strange?

I guess that takes care of the bad, the good, is, that its awesome 🙂 Center sharpness is great wideopen (look at the eyelashes). The CA is easy to control in Lightroom if that bothers you.

The Nokton 35mm got that “classic” feel i guess. But that doesnt mean its totally unsharp or crappy, the edges and corner sharpness sure isnt awesome, but in alot of pics it helps with the pop.

And sometimes, its not very good. But if you would learn how to use it. I think it for the most part will be good.

Bokeh is also awesome, not at all as busy as the MFT Noktons. 17.5mm & 42.5mm.

If you correct CA and ad some sharpness apart from the general sharpenings in LR (High pass in PS (1st picture)) you get really poppy and sharp pics.

Colors are also great, the Sony Fe 55mm f1.8 and Fe 28mm f2 tend to be a bit greenish and skin tones isnt quite there i think. But the Nokton 35mm colors are really nice 🙂

The balance of the camera is better with the 35mm, on the em5 its abit front heavy with the Noktons. The a7 + the 35 is more equal in weight.

Well thats all i have the stamina to write for now.

Update:

My impression broken down sofar:

@f1.2: Magical shots, great center sharpness. Not so sharp edges or corners, and by edges i mean a good bit into the picture.

@f2: Alot of the imge is really sharp. Corners and edges are alot better.

@f4: Kind like f2, slightly better.

@f8: Tack sharp exept for corners, they are still very soft.

The trails are muddy this time of year, and icy ,but in pre-season one ain´t picky.

Em5+Nokton 42.5 f0.95 wideopen B+W ND4  iso200 shutter 1/200 handheld.

Creemy bokeh and alot of pop 🙂 if you have a look around the handlebars and the saddle in pic 1, you´ll se the everpresent CA.

Took our bikes for a ride to the “view point” (we also had to walk and travel by farry) Great  day, great Coffee! Nice with some sun and warmth in the atumn gloom.

All but the one with the “springy thing” is whot wide open, the “springy thing” is shot at f5.6. Stoped down, The Noktons are flawless (“pretty much yeah”). Click the pictures and the topic will say “175” or “425” depending on the lens used. Sprayed away at 10fps to catch the guy on his moped. Luckaly he slowed down as he was passing, he pushed that thing to atleast 100kmh (im guessing) a little further down the road. Not just original parts i supose. 🙂

Other then that, nothing major to report. Tack sharp, nice bokeh. Awesome leneses.

Shot with Either Voigtländer Nokton 17.5mm f0.95 or Nokton 42.5mm f0.95 and Em-5. with either B+W UV and/or ND filters.

Thanks.

So here is finally a post, have been working for a few days and i havent worked up to shoting/posting. CA keeps accuring. But the most apparent thing i have noticed over the last few days is that there is alot less Coma then the 17.5mm has. and its definitely sharper aswell. Have had the CV 42.5mm f0.95 for 3weeks now? And its really awesome. Sure some CA, which i have been bitching about, that goes for both the 17.5 & 42.5.

Well, to sum up so far. Its sharp (even wideopen). slightly sharper then the 17.5, it has alot less coma then the 17.5. Colors are better (not alot), bokeh looks pretty much the same (good) its alittle smaler, 3D pop feeling is better. And on the down side? Well nothing really…

And about the images. Shot wideopen with the Em.5 + Nokton 42.5mm f0.95, hld6 (first part)

Got super lucky nailing that fish on the fly @f0.95. Took it at the weekly fishing competition in Torsång. Man those old men/ladies can haul some fish! The rest of the pics are shot at random places around “town”.

Foggy Nokton 42.5 stuff.

cv-42-web3 - Kopia bello-425-web cv-42-hood-web cv-42-web-2cv-42-web34Some shots from around the house. Foggy and not to apealing today. Im sure some great photo opportunities hade presented them self if i had gone. Buuuuuut, no. a Stroll around the house was enough, plus a shot of my new ski boots and of the CV Nokton 42.5 f0.95 with the hood. Witch i dont use so i havent really remembered to take a photo of it. But here it is. Looks better without i think. All but the one containing the 42.5mm is shot with the 42.5mm. the other one with 17.5mm all shot @0.95.

All but the last one, wich is shot @f5.6, is shot wideopen. It is sharp! Perhaps not as sharp as i initially said. But sharp! Only slightly sharper then my Nokton 17.5mm. I still belive colors and bokeh are alot better.

Separation in the 42.5mm is alot better to. It really gives you that “FF” feel.

When zooming in on pic nr6 i could clerly see her eyes and face detalis, wich is pretty impressive for a 16mp shot when cropped that much, its not really that much left to work with. And there is quite alot of CA around the handlabars on the stairs and around the postbox in the same shot.

So far i dont regret getting the lens for one second! Totally worth it! 🙂

Check black later for more “bokehlicious” shots.
