Refurbishing a Kiev Jupiter 9 85mm f2

kiev-2 kiev-1

Sony a7r + Nokton 35mm f1.2 II

Took my Jupiter 9 apart today and greesed it up. And i got it back together aswell 🙂 Suprisingly small amounts of cursewords and problems! Seems to work fine now, we´ll see how it performs when the ebay adapter arrives for my a7.

Removed a couple of fabric peaces that where counteracting there intended use. Decrease friction. So without the cloth peaces, there is some play but my guess is thats nothing to worry about 😛

Ordered a Minolta adapter from ebay for mft aswell, although my Em5 is flickering, its not unusable. So for the sake of testing i took some geek shots of my Sony 🙂

Its alot harder to focus the Minolta wideopen on the Em5 compared to the A7r. Donno why. The part of the picture thats acually in focus is harder to detect in the viewfinder on the Em5 altough the dof should be shorter on the Sony, so before trying it out, i would have assumed the opposite.

Added some extra sharpness to the Dynafit part of the this pic in PS with the High Pass filter function. it was taken at 1/60 so i got some blur.

Got some new found love for the Fe 28mm. I understood right away that it was a good lens, but after that it sort of fell in to the dark. 28 is not narrow like the 35 im used to, and its not wide like a 24. So it always felt wrong in my spine when i framed a shot and i didn´t get it right from the start.

But now, when its starting to settle, i realize this is an amazing lens.

200g or something ?(light as f…)

Sharp (as…)

Small

Fast af (Its got af! 🙂 im used to mf)

Even bokeh is nice!

This is a nifty 28! 🙂 Not quite pocketable but not far away either. Compared to the Nokton 17.5mm for m yEm5 i had befor i got the Sony A7r, the 28mm beats it on all levels. Its sharper, rather much sharper actually, so even though this is an f2 and its wider then the Nokton (35mm equvalent) and the Nokton would be an f1.9 in FF terms. The Fe28 feels like it gives more pop.

With the Mft system and the Noktons i always added some Highpass in PS when i was sharpening, even without highpass in the Fe28 shots you have more pop and sharpness. Editing can get you along way but the lack of detail, well, thats a fact. Kind of hard to get around.

CA is pretty apparent on the 28mm aswell, both green and purple, the difference is not that much better then the Nokton but, its clearly better.

And you get all this, at less then half the weight, half the price, in a smaller package, with AF, on a FF body, with less effort (both in post, and physically)

I rest my case 🙂

Full frame -> Mft comparison. (Omg) ;) Sony a7r vs Em5 (with nokton)

Most people, or atleast the slightly neerdier ones have a pretty strong opinion about weather this is “possible” or not. Comparing Mft to FF i mean. But here i go again.

The mindblowing detail of the 36mpix A7r sensor isn´t really there. When i sharpen pictures i look at them 100% so often it feels like the detail and sharpness is at best on pair with my Mft setup with Em5 and Noktons.

But when i zoom out, and see the “bigger picture” i realize thats not really the case. The A7r delivers “better” pictures for sure. Will i ever “use” the 36mpix and the “better” image quality? With 92.1 – 99.3% certainty, NO.

But thats not the reason i bought the full frame A7r either. The reason was mostly my Em5 is breaking apart, the shorter DOF, FF Bokeh and dynamic range.

At 100% the sharpness of the Noktons i had with my Em5 is on pair With my current set up. (But the A7r is 36pix so its actually alot less detail in the mft shots)

My Minolta MC 50mm f1.4 + A7r is a lighter package and delivers alot of “Bokeh for the buck” with great dynamic range.

But lets focus on the reasons i bought the A7r, DOF, Bokeh and Dynamic range, and i think this is where full frame is still in a league of its own. Sharpness and on many levels ISO is really good on the MFT system. Somehow the Em5, eventhough the pictures are noiser then lets say a Canon 5d mkii, there is more detail in the Em5 picture.

If one would do the math, Noktons f0.95 is not that far behind, thats about f1.9 on full frame, but the separation and pop i get with f1.4 on my A7r is really where it prevails. Bokeh is alot nicer on the lenses i have bought so far. Its not as “harsh” (now im beeng a little picky here, the Nokton bokeh is great) as the Noktons some times are.

DOF feels alot shorter even if the background seems blurred out to the same or similar extent the subject(s) seem to pop more.

And dynamic range, i still havent gotten used to it, alot of the times i push the trigger and think, “Thats gonna be blown out” but its not. I still cant belive how good on that regard it is, the dynamic range is a world of difference.

And one more great thing, Focus peaking! I had no ( or wery little issue ) with manual focus on my Em5 but now, with focus peaking. Why would anyone want AF? 😛 Siriously though, AF is great of course, but focus peaking is aswell!

I have an appointment in 30min so i gotto go, i´ll read through this later. Sorry if  the spelling is worse then usual.

So yeah, this is as bad as it gets, sun high in the sky, blue bird, white reflective transperent cup, reflective background. Everything in this pic produce CA. This would be one of those times you should stop down to get rid of the CA , but who can resist the f0.95 right? :).

It took a couple of minutes to correct most of the purple CA in Photoshop, 1st pic is a corrected version and the 2nd is a 100% crop.

3rd pic is a non corrected and the 4th is a 100% crop of that one.

I usually dont bother/care about CA but in this case it totaly ruined the picture, and its not that big of a deal to correct when it gets bad.

mostly all i need to do (in my opinion) is decrease the saturation of purple in Lightroom and the worst is gone, and when it all turns to shit, i´ll use PS for a couple of minutes.

If you dont know how, just check Youtube.

Creemy bokeh and alot of pop 🙂 if you have a look around the handlebars and the saddle in pic 1, you´ll se the everpresent CA.

Not easy shooting a running horse with manual focus and f0.95 😛

Got a couple of frames right though. Moore then i anticipated 🙂
